Supporting mid-life women with bleeding and receding gums, so they can smile with confidence – inside and out.
Sarah-Joy Lendon is The Virtual Hygienist – an online oral health education and support service helping people understand their mouths, make informed decisions about their oral health and take practical steps towards keeping their natural teeth for longer.
With more than 25 years of experience within dentistry, Sarah-Joy has worked across the NHS, private dentistry, community settings, Harley Street and even prison healthcare. Her career has included working as a dental nurse, oral health educator, dental hygienist and dental therapist. She is also a compassionate life coach giving her a broad understanding of both the clinical and human sides of oral health and life in general.
But The Virtual Hygienist grew from recognising that knowing what to do and actually being able to do it are not always the same thing.
Sarah-Joy particularly supports women in mid-life who are experiencing bleeding or receding gums. Many have always considered themselves to be people who look after their teeth and attend their dental appointments, yet they continue to experience problems with their gums. For some women, these changes become more noticeable during perimenopause and menopause, leaving them wondering why something they have always managed suddenly feels different.
Hormonal changes and stress do not cause gum disease, but they can make the mouth more susceptible to problems and can affect how existing issues are experienced and managed. Sarah-Joy believes women deserve more than simply being told to “brush better” or to return for another appointment without understanding what is really happening.
Her approach combines professional dental knowledge with education, compassion and whole-person support.
Through The Virtual Hygienist, Sarah-Joy helps clients understand the signs and causes of gum disease, tooth decay and other common oral health problems, explore the factors that may be influencing their oral health, and understand their treatment and prevention options.
She also recognises that oral health does not exist in isolation. The mouth is connected to the rest of the body, and factors including nutrition, blood sugar, hormones, stress, lifestyle and emotional wellbeing can all play a role in how we experience our health.
Sarah-Joy therefore takes a holistic approach while remaining grounded in evidence-based dental care. Her aim is not to replace a dentist or hygienist, but to help people become more informed, confident and empowered in managing their own oral health and working alongside their dental team.
Alongside a host of other services, her Oral Health Empowerment Programme provides accessible education and ongoing support for people who want to understand their mouths rather than simply being told what to do. A personalised planning call with Sarah-Joy is always the first step, helping individuals make sense of their situation and identify appropriate next steps.
For Sarah-Joy, oral health is about more than healthy teeth and gums. It is about confidence, wellbeing and being able to smile freely.
Because your outer smile can be the first step towards a healthier, more confident inner smile.
