James Phipps
From Start-Up to Scale-Up: How Culture Shapes Success
Born and raised in Swindon, James Phipps has built a reputation as one of the South West’s most dynamic entrepreneurs and business influencers. Today, he combines leadership with investment, philanthropy, and hands-on operating roles to help guide businesses to scale, purpose and success.
From Humble Beginnings
James’s entrepreneurial journey started early. As a teenager he took on small gardening jobs to help his family—a humble beginning that would sow the seeds of his ambition.
Over time, he turned those early ventures into larger enterprises, building teams around him and learning the lessons of leadership, risk and persistence along the way.
Building & Exiting with Purpose
Before his current roles, James served as Executive Chairman at Excalibur Communications, where he led the business through growth phases, strategic transitions, and ultimately a management buyout.
After stepping away from day-to-day operations, he turned his attention to investing, mentoring, and charitable work—bringing his expertise to a new wave of businesses.
Returning to the Core
In late 2024, James returned to the operational arena by taking on the role of Executive Chairman at WestSpring IT, a fast-growing managed services provider based in the South West.
In doing so, he also committed a personal investment to support expansion plans, recruitment, and deeper customer-centric culture. He sees this new chapter as an opportunity to bring his experience in scaling teams, driving values-based culture, and delivering excellence to a business ready for its next phase.
James’s track record includes achieving:
ISO accreditations, Times Top 100 Employer status, and Investors in People accreditation in prior roles
Leadership and board roles across multiple sectors and charitable organisations
Mentorship and advisory involvement in growing digital and service-oriented SMEs
A Heart for Philanthropy & Youth
Beyond business, James serves as Chair of The Platform Project, a Swindon-based youth development organisation.
Under his leadership, the project has expanded its reach, helping young people develop enterprise skills, confidence and employability.
His belief in giving back is woven into his approach: success is not just about profit, but about empowering others.
James Phipps will share raw insights from his entrepreneurial journey—from early hustles in Swindon, to scaling businesses, to guiding firms through expansion and reinvention. Attendees will hear how he balances challenge and opportunity, how he fosters culture-driven leadership, and how he views the role of purpose in modern business.
Expect stories you can relate to, lessons you can apply, and the kind of candid, energetic delivery that only someone who has “been through the fire” can bring.
